A Classic Southern Delight: Gingerbread Recipe

Gingerbread Recipe

1 c. cane syrup
1 c. shortening
1 Tblsp each cinnamon, ginger, allspice, cloves
1 c. brown sugar

Combine 1st 7 ingredients in a 4 quart pan and bring to a boil; reduce heat to medium. Cook just until shortening is melted. remove from heat.2 1/4 cups plain flour combine flour and salt; add slowly to mixture, a little at a time, beating until batter is smooth.

1 c. buttermilk
2 eggs

Stir buttermilk & eggs into batter.

1 tsp baking soda
1/4 c hot water

Dissolve soda in hot water; stir into batter and mix well. Pour batter into a greased and floured 12x7x1.5 inch baking pan. Bake at 350 for 50 to 60 minutes, until gingerbread tests done.
